Delhi’s MICE Industry is facing a new challenge amid Covid 19
Pragati Maidan, with many other Five & Four Star Hotels & Stadiums are to be converted to Covid 19 hospitals & Isolation Centres.
The decision will hugely affect the Exhibition Sector in not only national capital but the country as a whole as Delhi organizes the maximum number of exhibitions in India and capital itself neglecting the sector means an overall negative impact on the exhibitions in the entire country. Interestingly- ITPO has given confirmations to many organizers, (subject to approval from the central government) to host exhibitions from August 2020 onwards and have even prepared SOP to open the Exhibitions at Pragati Maidan.
The hospitals are proposed for a minimum of four months which may be extended depending upon the situation of Covid 19.This also means the organisers , who have been given the confirmation of dates from August 2020 will have to now face fresh uncertainty at-least till October 2020, further delaying the opening of the Exhibitions.
An expert medical panel of Delhi Government formed to look into the possibility of creating additional healthcare infrastructure had recommended Pragati Maidan, Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Thyagaraj Indoor Stadium, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium and the Dhyanchand National Stadium be used as COVID 19 hospitals along with five star and four-star hotels be attached to the hospitals in order to increase the number of total available beds for treating Covid 19 patients. These recommendations were made to the Lieutenant Governor with Delhi Disaster Management Authority meeting held on Tuesday.
Tourism Ministry at Center had previously boasted itself for recognizing MICE as a Champion Sector by giving Rs 70,000 as benefit to MICE Organisers from each 200 foreign delegates they could bring to Delhi.
